Mayor Angela R. Garretson
Mayor Angela R. Garretson became Hillside’s fourth Mayor elected under its current form of government and began her term on January 1, 2014. Just prior to becoming Mayor, she served a 4 year term on the municipal council from 2009-2013 as a Councilperson-at-Large. Mayor Garretson began her career as an elected official as a member of the Hillside Board of Education in 2004 and was re-elected to a second term in 2007.
Mayor Garretson has been honored on numerous occasions as an innovative champion of education and a tireless advocate focused on priorities such as public safety, jobs and property tax stabilization. She believes in open, transparent government and gets the most satisfaction in solving problems.
Mayor Garretson has been active on every level of government. In county government, she has served on the Union County Commission on the Status of Women. Throughout the State, she is a member of the New Jersey Black Mayor’s Alliance for Social Justice, a member of the Urban Mayor’s Association and a member of the Legislative Committee of the New Jersey League of Municipalities. Before entering municipal government she also served the residents of Hillside as a legislative aide under the General Assembly.
As a member of the United States Conference of Mayors, Mayor Garretson has been a consistent voice on behalf of young people, senior citizens and property tax payers during her visits to the White House and on Capitol Hill. Professionally, Mayor Garretson works in the field of public affairs in higher education. In 2001, she began her career at Rutgers-New Brunswick Eagleton Institute of Politics where she worked on city, state and national initiatives. Currently, she is employed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology where she is part of the college president’s cabinet.
Mayor Garretson and her family have been residents of Hillside since 1975. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Syracuse University where she majored in dual degree in Business and Communications. She then went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Mayor Garretson is now a completing her Doctorate Degree in a joint degree program at NJIT/Rutgers. The Mayor is a member of the Young Elected Officials Network, a national organization that prepares leaders elected by age 35 or younger and, she strongly believes in working with colleagues to learn, in addition to earn continuing education credits in local government operations.
